VoyageKC Interview Feature

I got to share a little bit about me to the staff at VoyageKC, and it was a blast! Read the full article on VoyageKC.com or scroll on.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steph Rupp.

Hi Steph, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m Steph Rupp. I have lived in Kansas City nearly my entire life, and I love it here! I grew up sitting in front of a computer screen (hey, no judgement!), so I was excited to study Management Information Systems when I attended Kansas State. Straight out of college I worked as a web development project manager for four years before starting my own business, Steph Rupp LLC, in 2019. I provide website design and development, photography, graphic design and more for my clients – I try to help out with the little things “in between” as much as I can.

I’ve always been passionate about computers and art, but it took me much too long to realize you could combine the two. Besides my project management background, I am a self taught graphic designer and social media addict with a flair for bright colors and fun patterns. Web design is as much of a hobby of mine as it is a career. My goal is to continue to brighten KC by creating graphics, taking over social media, editing gorgeous photos and growing local businesses.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I had told myself in the past that I couldn’t run my own business because I had no experience in sales. What I found out is that when you’re passionate about what you are selling or providing, it really isn’t sales, it’s just connecting with others who could benefit from what you offer. Being genuine and transparent about your mission and your services leads to great client relationships.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a freelancer that specializes in Squarespace website design and development. I use my additional skills in photography, graphic design and copywriting to enhance the websites I design for my clients. I feel like each of those pieces together make an exceptional product.

I am most proud of the wide variety of clients I have had the pleasure of working with. From criminal defense attorneys to HVAC companies, to makers and bloggers, to sports teams and restaurants, I love helping them and learning from them.

I believe my transparency and honesty sets me apart from others. I prioritize autonomy and ownership – my clients own their websites and can do with them as they please! No hostage situation here. I always work to make sure my clients know why I do something when I do it.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I am a big fan of saying “yes”. When a new opportunity or challenge comes to you, say yes and figure out how to take it on. A lot of my best relationships have been formed this way. You never know if it will work until you try. If it’s not working out, don’t worry. You can always be upfront and honest and end the relationship or project.

As for finding a mentor, I simply follow many graphic designers on Instagram. I am constantly inspired and learning new tips from talented people!
